This annual $1,000 award will be presented to a higher education student we feel embodies and effectively communicates our shared belief in the need for true reform in the criminal justice arena that includes comprehensive review of existing sentencing guidelines and possible eradication of mandatory minimum sentences.Students Eligible for Scholarship Consideration
The Jeffrey Lichtman Criminal Justice Reform Scholarship is open to all students who are or will soon be enrolled in a junior college, community college, undergraduate or graduate institution within the United States. As such, high school graduates who are about to commence college-level studies and current GED holders are also eligible for the prize.
The most competitive applicants for the scholarship are those who successfully and persuasively communicate their views on criminal justice reform and describe why they believe advocacy in support of sentencing guideline reviews and adjustments is so critical to maintaining the integrity of our legal system now and in the future.
Students interested in applying for the scholarship are required to provide evidence of good academic standing obtained from their present institution of higher education. In terms of this award, the good standing criterion will be demonstrated by submitting proof of at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA on a scale of 4.0.Application Procedures
All scholarship candidates will need to submit a cover sheet as well as a current, updated resume including relevant contact information and clear statement of present educational level and student status. Also required is the student's most recent transcript from the last academic institution attended (unofficial formats may be substituted).
Freshman applicants may send unofficial documentation from the most recent institution attended, along with any other documentation available from their current school.
Lastly, applicants must provide an original, written essay consisting of at least 750 words which discusses their philosophy on matters of criminal justice reform and articulates the ways in which they intend to champion the causes of eliminating mandatory minimum sentences and conducting ongoing reviews of criminal sentencing guidelines.Important Details and Application Timetable
