Reporters' Tweets from the Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman Trial Summation

Maria Santana, CNN:

In an already crazy trial, closing statement by #ElChapo attorney Jeffrey Lichtman, @NYCDefenseLaw, was so wildy entertaining it's a shame it couldnt be televised. With humor & sarcasm, he relentlessly attacked credibility of govt's cooperating witnesses..

Emily Palmer, NY Times:

I would like to thank @NYCDefenseLaw for fun few hours of defense today. The audience was highly entertained - so much so that the judge had to remind those in the audience to quiet their laughter.

Keegan Hamilton, Vice News:

This was just an astonishing performance by Lichtman. He was repeatedly admonished by the judge for crossing the line. He almost cried at the end. Other times he was cracking jokes like it was a stand-up comedy routine.
— Keegan Hamilton (@keegan_hamilton) January 31, 2019

It's a shame this isn't televised because it's really quite the show. Lichtman used to do talk radio and he's channeling that today. He clearly enjoys being the bad boy. Part of the strategy is to provoke the government and make it seem like they want to keep him quiet.
— Keegan Hamilton (@keegan_hamilton) January 31, 2019

He's pounding the podium, comments dripping with sarcasm. … it's a spectacle to watch.
— Keegan Hamilton (@keegan_hamilton) January 31, 2019

Lichtman's closing statement ends with his voice trembling as he implores the jury: "You don't have to give into the myth of El Chapo and just convict."
Afterward, Chapo gripped his shoulder and gave him an enthusiastic handshake, signaling his approval.
